So, with valentines day but a day away,my minds obviously reeling what hubs ‘n I could possibly do for the day. You know, to keep the magic alive, fires burning and other such metaphors.
We don’t truly buy into the whole commercialism of the day, and yes “everyday SHOULD be valentines”, but I’m a sucker for holidays, so we always tend to do something, no matter how small. We’ve also extended the day to not just showing our love to each other, but to others too.
Like the make-shift picnic we had in my parents bedroom with my mom and dad a few years back. (Dad wasn’t feeling too well that day). It was so simple, yet lovely, with small bits of some of my dad’s favourite foods and wine that we brought. It ended up being our last “double date” with my folks, before my dad’s passing a few weeks later. A good day. A great memory. I thank my hubby for that-twas all his idea.
So yes, because of that we often share the day with others. However, with each of us having just survived hectic work projects for the past year that kept us up late at night and apart, my hubby’s rather demanding studies, his new job, my pregnancy, and then 3months of class “A” sleep deprivation courtesy of baby no2, its clear we’re both in need and want of some dedicated “us” time this year.
But what?!
We were thinking of a loved up picnic at Weltevreden Estate, with an outdoor cinema. Not a bad idea, since we both just recently fell inlove with this place.
Or I was even thinking of suprising hubs with a nice dinner ‘n movie at the Pepperclub hotel out in Cape Town CBD. (geez, I hope he’s not reading this.) They’ve just launched their friday movie nights with their intimate 29 seater cinema that has big comfy red leather chairs. You get a yum one course dindin AND a movie at only R120/person. (How awesome is that?)
However, being parents to a 2 year old and a 3 month old, reality bears necessary consideration here. We’re in the throws of sleep training (*gasp!*sleep training? Yes. Don’t be too quick to judge, u know not of the hell I had to claw my way out of. Nor, I suspect that if you ARE judging, are you familiar with the lastest methods that are gentle on you and baby. More on that later) Also our nanny herself has plans, so babysitters are gonna be like hen’s teeth this valentines. We may just have to get creative instead.
I could try a lovely candle lit dinner poolside- alfresco style! While the kids sleep. Bring the sound system outside (and the baby monitors) and cook up a gourmet dinner. Or I could just cook…period. I haven’t been much doing much of that for past few weeks. (Baby no2 has had me doing the crazy dance for some time now. ). My poor man. Shucks. And he’s been so patient with me about it. I need to cook that man a meal of epic proportions. Any ideas?
Ok, this definitely sounds like a workable plan to me. Excuse me while I go find something fancy to cook. ( Or just order in, if murphy ‘n his law pay me a visit again)
Oh and by the way,if staying in for V day is just not your speed this year, and if you were keen to try Tables at Nitida after my last post, then you may have just found a reason to go this friday! They’re hosting a picnic under the stars at their natural amphitheatre, featuring a live performance by pop instrumental trio Sterling EQ. R600 per couple.
Let me know how it was, if you do go!
In fact, I’d just love to know what your plans are for this V-day. Or maybe you could share some loved up recipe with me that I could cook up for hubs!
awesome ideas! I think dinner should be whatever is hubby’s fave…since you are spoiling him this year. I’m not sure what we have planned, if anything, but a night-in sounds good to me… Since nanny is off and mom busy… And then also good For my budget ? maybe a seafood Thai green curry on my menu since I have seafood in the freezer! And bubbly!
Olive&rose10, “And bubbly” are the magic words to any v-day menu! Hope it was a great date night with hubz!
The Pepperclub sounds lovely, would deft have to try that in future. Not sure what we doing as yet, so have to figure that out. Finding the balancing act to give attention to baby after not seeing her for the whole day (and a bit of guilt) vs. hubby a daily struggle. So deft need to pull a rabbit out of the hat this day. Wish me good luck 🙂 good luck with your plans. Hope they work out…that is if the children end up sleeping…..
Indeed, Stiegie, its a hard balancing that parents, especially moms deal with.
