So, you should know by now, that I am a comic book lover/die hard…and Im not talking about being a pseudo fan here because I suddenly loved the movies that cropped up over the over years. (and there’s nothing wrong with that if you are) But I’m a bonafide fan from the good ol’ days where as a youngster I would tag along with my brother to go get the much anticipated latest shipment of comics, or rock up in town at crazy-o-clock in the morning, just to be the first at Reader’s Den, to get our grubby little hands on a 1st issue. So it goes without saying that I’ve also had a piqued interest in ComicCon all the years too (yes, Im a nerd and I cant lie)…In fact, to this day I still get super excited when I watch my US family prep and attend the cosplay events over there. Now, the highly anticipated Comic Con Africa 2019 welcomes the youngest member of the family to its spectacular four day offering, KidsCon!!

A Personal Friend of Madiba: A Brief Interview

Sidenote:Can we just talk about that photo up top first? It’s actually quite old, taken in the time where digital was not even around, so the quality is a bit dodge – as are the rest of the pics. And yet, I find it still as breathtaking as I did all those years ago when I first saw it. It became one of my top 5 favourite iconic shots of Nelson Mandela. And I believe it won an Argus Photography award back in the day too. And for good reason, I think. And my opinion is not at all influenced by the fact that I know those people in it…

A couple of years ago, in honour of Madiba Day, I innocently posted a pic of myself and my cousin all
squashed together on her couch with Madiba, along with how this legend of man inspired me. And
then, the questions started to pour in about how this photo came about. Many also encouraged me
to blog about it, and whilst I cherish that day, I’m too sure about that, as there is a far more interesting story behind it all that has nothing to do with me.

Don’t get me wrong, the day I met and got to spend the afternoon with him was incredible and
forever emblazed in my mind, and the wisdom imparted by him to me, stays with me to this day. However, there is a far more intriguing side to it all that I’d love to share with you… I’d like to introduce you to my cousin, Heidi Manus, the very reason I got to meet our former President.

Our Precious Cargo – why I’m supporting the #CarseatFullstop campaign and why you should too!

Whenever my dad would see me off at the door, even as grown as I was, he would always holler out to my driver, “be safe on the road, you have some precious cargo on board there” (pointing to me). It had become a family phrase he coined – one I remember him saying to me ever since I was small, as a signal to me to buckle up. When his grandkids came around, it was the same story that he would holler to their parents. Precious cargo, indeed- because he knew that a child depended on you to make the right decisions for their safety whilst on the road. And so, every time I strap my own little ones into their car seats, I can’t help but think, “my precious cargo”.

If any of you were at Grand West this past Thursday evening, and heard screams of joy and whooping echoing through the corridors…that would be my kids. You’d be forgiven if you thought you may have stumbled into Spring Break party of sorts, but it was just my two little girls on the 35 meter high slope, going warp speed, sledding down together, and enjoying the crap out it…Yes, apparently my girls are “whoop” girls…and I absolutely LOVE their spirit of fun!
