I’d like to tell you how blissful and easy first day back to school was. You know, where we all get up on time, everyone and everything plays with, so things go smoothly.
I’d also like to tell you that Im one of those moms who if given the choice, get up before their kids, get done and wait for them to rise. I’d really like to, but I’m just not. You see, sleep and I just don’t get enough quality time together, so when we do get a chance, we like to milk it for all it’s worth. In fact, sleep and I are like those two people who met and really like each other and vow to meet up and just hang out some more. But time just never allows for it. But we keep vowing – because we really like each other.
So ya, instead I wait for the sounds of life in the house to get me up. (And of course, the vital cup of life –coffee- that Mikey often brings to me.) Like this morning, I heard Morgan tip toe out of her room so as to not wake her small sis. But with all the commotion that inevitably happens, small sis woke up. Meaning that I was getting done with two small people as well. Nothing wrong with that, but certainly not the most time-efficient manner to get anywhere on time. Especially when the one monkey wants you to do everything with her on the hip. Everything. I clearly forgot to put on my other pair of arms this morning.
Also, said cling-on monkey expects you to get her done for school just like big sis, even though she’s not even at school. She’s got her own school bag and everything.
I’d like to then tell you we got that magic money shot of first day back to school with cute outfits and just every bit of the day’s essence captured with perfect light, so that we can one day gaze upon these visual records as they tug heavily on our heart strings – “oh look how far we’ve come!”.
But alas, no cool hand-painted board or chalkboard to date-stamp the pic, or perfect backdrops with perfect smiles. We do, however, have the silliness of our little beasties perfectly captured on the day.
Big sister trying to corral smally with about the same success as herding cats.
Trying to give love, but just getting silliness – equally as good, and by the way, silliness IS love in sibling language.
I even got to join in on the shenanigans. All very good reasons to be ok with being late.
I’d also like to tell you that I’m writing this post at the gym, because Im going to catch a bitchin’ workout afterwards that’s simply murder. But alas, I cannot. I’m actually just here hiding out from my super-duper cling-on two year old who has managed to push me well beyond my patience thresholds early this morning already. I think I need a little time-out. And a nap. But I just cant do naps, so this time-out will have to do.
By the way, it did occur to me to grab my gym gear – no time like the present, right? But I was already running so late for school to still seek out some decent workout clothes(that I don’t own), that I ditched the idea just as quickly. Maybe later, though, cause sister over here can already feel the slow death inside of me that’s happening without movement in my life.
Oh, and I’d also like to tell you how super prepared I was for this whole going back to school thing…Not as in, “I cant believe my baby is in X year/grade” (although, I TOTALLY get that). But more as in, I wasn’t even sure when school started. Seriously. If it wasn’t for another cool mom I know, there’s a strong possibility I may have missed it entirely– although, honestly, my hubby would’ve probably saved the day.
So if you follow me on Instragram, you’d have known how I was excitedly dedicating the most of Sunday past to school prep. BUT. Life is what happens while you’re out making plans: Instead of prepping and getting my shit together and everyone into bed early, I spent my night in the ER with Morgan-Lee. Spiking 40’ temperatures all day are not normally part of most people school-prep plans. But there we were. Morgy with watery eyes, skin on fire, and me with my emergency backpack on filled with snacks and drinks. And a good thing too, as it was a busy night there. What a job those people have.
Obviously, as I rushed through the doors of the ER, I noticed madam’s temp had dramatically dropped. Obviously. What is with these girls of ours making dramatic recoveries the moment we stepped into the ER?!? Rather that, though, I’d say.
True to form though, madam Morgan was a trooper and felt perfectly fine this morning, no ear pain anymore and was ready to take one 2016 school year like a boss. And what a sunshiny boss is she!
We chatted about school on the short drive in, and whilst not as chatty, she was fine. Ready. Maybe a slightly hesitation right at the door of her new class, but as we knocked and walked in, she was greeted by her usual, warm and welcoming greeting, “MORGAN!!!!”, in synch from her small little buddies in class. She sent me off with our neat and super quick little goodbye ritual we’ve done since she was a tiny little babums, and just like that, we were back in the swing of things.
School year of 2016 has indeed commenced. Water play, class parties, painting, crafting and other such hard work. 😉
So I’d like to tell you that a lot of things may not turn out picture perfect as they may be in your head or as you’d like them to be, such as first day at school, but that I suppose is the dependable thread of parenthood. What keeps us on our toes, what pushes us to keep trying and striving for better, and ensures that sanity is always a little bit in question. And then sometimes it can be perfect– like straight off the back of a unicorn fresh from the rainbow meadows. Those days we take it and run, document them with the camera, and squeeze the last celebratory drops out of it. But whatever way it does go, maybe it already is perfect, just as it is, it’s own way. Ready to be embraced. Sometimes its up to us to go find it, sometimes our children lead the way…
Now, time to get my butt home to one little cling-on monkey. This almost-an-hour-ish time-out worked it’s magic and am now missing that little beasty something terrible already. But first….coffee.
Here’s to happy first days at school for all your munchkins and you momma bears out there! In fact, while we’re at it, here’s to the rest of the year! X
Glad your first day went ok, apart from the clingy 2 year old, and Morgan’s temp hasn’t come back
