Hey preggo mama, are you loving your bump, but desperately looking for a great pregnancy massage to sort out that niggle in your lower back(ouch)? Or how about you, new momma, over there? I bet you’re absolutely smitten with that gorgeous little newborn bundle of your’s, but totally hating on that crick in the neck, courtesy of the all night feeding that you do so lovingly. Or how about that stiff back that threatens to spasm up if you dare bend over that cot just one more time. Sound familiar to any of you mums, out there?
Or maybe you feel none of this, but your body is still begging for a little bit of TLC? I mean, which parent isn’t, right?! But honestly, with our endless to do list, and sometimes just the sheer lack of energy and time, more often than not, we tend to shove that much needed massage off from our to- do list. I mean, it’s already been a helluva day, who has the energy to still get in the car and fight traffic AGAIN, right?! Now, what if I told you I found someone who is pretty damn awesome at sorting out all those aches, pains and niggles? And, better yet, what if I told you that she could do it all in the comfort of your OWN HOME?! Then you’re going to love hearing about Mummy Massage!
Yes, that’s right, lovelies, the lovely Berneen Eigner of Mummy Massage will transform your very own bedroom (or any room of your choice) into a little slice of spa heaven. As a full time working mother and wife, Im all about convenience, and saving on time and effort, so this service was just a perfect little addition to my toolbelt for life.No driving, no chasing across town to make the appointment, no traffic jams, no stress. And, wait for it….Save on petrol!
What’s even better is that there is no need to disturb the relaxed vibe that the massage leaves you in afterwards. So no getting dressed again (if you so desire) and then hopping back into your car – with more traffic(oh joy). You could now simply just chill out with your smallies on the couch. (relaxed momma = happy kids)Orrrr maybe, if youre’ lucky, and hubby is a super star, you could curl up and take a nap!
I definitely was lucky in that whilst I was getting my massage on, not only was hubby taking care of the kids, but he was also whipping up some awesome lunch!
This is an excellent mobile service that Berneen offers and truth be told, it was a service I wish was around about year ago, when I was deep in the trenches of “newborn-baby-dom” with my second beasty.
Holy crap, was that a rough ride for us! It’s a story that I’m still busy growing the balls to share with you on this blog, one day. But until I do, the point I wanted to make was that in those trenches, with my neck in such spasm, that I wished I could just rip my head off,
my back and traps so tight, it looked like I was saying “I dunno” all day, and my lower back just twinging at every step I took. All I wanted and needed was a massage. But I just couldn’t for the life of me see HOW I was going to get out of the house! There I was, with this tiny little cherub, attached to my boob 24/7, who’d scream blue murder if I even thought about putting her down for a quick pee break. I hadn’t slept in days. Literally. Not figuratively. So even if I did manage to de-latch her, psychologically block out her screams, as I make my break, and escape the house, who knew if I even had the brain capacity to still command my car!?So to the interwebs I went, and hunted for a mobile massage service. But I came up with zilsch. Nada. Nothing. Zip!
Huh?How could this be? I thought. Surely someone out there has spotted the gap in the market, right? Providing a reliable, effective and convenient service in the form of door-to-door massages. But, nothing cropped up – at least not yet. Hubby, however, did an excellent job at filling in those shoes in the interim. I, however, did not quit searching. And it’s a good thing I didn’t, as I eventually DID stumble across Mummy massage! It took me a while to get to setting up the appointment, but once I contacted Berneen, the rest was easy and quick.
I used email –my go to tool for multi-tasking and getting everything done in a day- and Berneen was fantastically quick in her responses. She’s a busy lady, but understands the needs of parents out there and is thus, quite flexible, and works according to your schedule – obviously all within reason. She’s also fairly accommodating w.r.t working moms (and dads too!), and will even so much as operate until about 7 to 8pm the evenings if need be. (Please confirm her operating hours, as this was correct at time of print.)
Her services come at a very reasonable price, especially if you factor in the convenience factor of the mobile service. A 60 minute deep tissue massage goes for R500 (plus the travel fee that is worked out according to the kilometres travelled). She also has a fantastic “bring a friend” discounted offer for both of you. Meaning it could be you and hubby, you and your mom or, as the offer suggests, you and a friend.
My awesome buddy, Liz was bets for it, so we decided to make a day of it. Our awesome hubbies looked after our girls, and cooked lunch, while we relaxed it up on the massage table.
Considering my location, it worked out to be R600 for the single massage or R900 for the discounted offer for both. It was a great discount, in my opinion.
After Berneen had her way with me, I felt all loose, and relaxed, with all my little ouchies nicely worked out, and stretched out. Liz said that she too felt awesome, and certainly looked refreshed after been seen to by the very capable Berneen. Thereafter, Liz and I, totally chilled out and feeling like putty, sipped on some excellent wine, whilst enjoying the summer sun with our darling little girlies.

Sharing laughs and enjoying the sun with our girls: Little EJ and I enjoying a good vintage….(and for non-humourous readers, thats good ol’ H2O in little EJ’s glass)

Her relax-game is strong: No one does chilling out in the sun, quite like Parker-Grace. Except, maybe her big sis!;)
By the way, in case you’re wondering, the oils Berneen uses are all specific for purpose. So the ones for prenatal massage, Berneen has assured are safe for pregnant ladies. There are also oils specifically for:
-
–metabolising fat and cellulite (Cellu 1, 2 & 3)
-
–aleviate sore and stiff muscles (Sports Muscle)
-
–regeneration of tissues after an operation or trauma like c-section(Tramino)
-
–Enhancing female wellbeing, relieving PMT or menopausal symptoms, and thus may aid in balancing hormones after birth. (Sunset)
Berneen has been a massage therapist since 2000, and has studied all over the world (America, UK, Greece), as well as worked on private yachts for the rich and famous. She studied prenatal massage in the UK as her previous boss’ wife fell pregnant and then subsequently sent her to the UK to learn the techniques.
And in case you were looking, she’s also a qualified Mama Bamba doula(not currently practising), as well as a soula. (that is, someone who facilitates connecting with your unborn child – maybe more on that in another post.) She can also show you how to do baby massage on your little munchkin. Interested in any of her services? Then why not give her a call or go check out her website or Facebook page?
Also just to keep things real, my girls went totally ape shit the moment they realised mommy was off limits. So whilst Berneen says all you would need is a relatively quiet environment (which our home usually is), that morning it was not! It was a clear cut case of a nuthouse. To his defense, hubby remained the calm person that he usually is, and managed the girls fantastically…even if it took about ten minutes or so. We made it work. But for future massages, we’ve agreed on an open door policy.
However, if you’re not so sure that your nuthouse will be anything less than a nuthouse, Berneen does have her own offices from which she also operates, based out in Warmer Estate. Perfect when you want to escape the maddening crowd.

So whilst I cannot give you a personal review on her actual pregnancy massage (God willingly, maybe I will in a few years from now), I can tell you that her deep tissue massage was top notch. I usually go for a sports therapeutic massage at my trusty massage therapist of almost 7 years, to sort out any injuries or aches and pains. Therefore, I have a pretty good base to compare, and say that she does well to treat any problem areas to an acceptable degree. However, she does provide a fantastically relaxing element, which I think is what most parents are looking for in a massage.
Do yourself and your weary muscles a favour and book a session with her. You can thank me later. If her techinique isn’t enough to win you over already, the pure convenience of the service will!
It was indeed amazing and well timed!
Couldnt agree more,Stieg&pitjie. We to have need have more mummy massage in our life!
it was an absolute pleasure coming out to see you lovely ladies. As you mentioned above a parent often shoves their needs to the back of the priority list and that is exactly why Mummy Massage exists! Happy Parent = Happy Kids! Cant wait till we meet up again. Take care of your fantastic selves!
Totally agree, Berneen! And thanks for stopping by here. We will most certainly be using your excellent services again!
